At St Michael’s Catholic Primary School, Art and Design is valued as a way for pupils to develop creativity, confidence and personal expression. Through well-planned experiences, children are encouraged to explore ideas, reflect on their work and develop technical skills using a wide range of materials and processes.

We deliver our Art curriculum through the Access Art Primary Art Curriculum, which provides a clear and progressive framework from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme ensures that pupils revisit and build upon key artistic skills over time, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and mixed media. Children learn about a diverse range of artists and art forms and are supported to develop their own creative voice.

Art at St Michael’s is inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Lessons are designed to allow children to succeed from different starting points, encouraging experimentation and individual responses while maintaining high expectations for effort and presentation.

Art is taught regularly in all year groups using Access Art units which sequence learning and ensure progression of skills. Teachers follow structured plans that include opportunities for exploration, skill development and final outcomes.

Across the school:

• A wide range of materials and processes are used, including drawing tools, paint, printing equipment and construction resources.

• Vocabulary linked to art techniques and artists is taught explicitly and used in discussion and reflection.

• Lessons include opportunities for choice and creativity while maintaining high expectations for effort and presentation.

• Adaptive approaches ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can fully access learning.

Pupils at St Michael’s enjoy Art and engage positively in lessons across the school. Work in sketchbooks and displays demonstrates creativity, experimentation and growing technical skill. Children develop confidence in using different materials and take pride in their outcomes.

Art contributes to pupils’ wellbeing and self-expression, and the subject maintains a high profile through classroom and corridor displays that celebrate achievement and progression.

Tate Kids is a useful website allowing children to make, pay games and quizzes and explore a range of art, artists with tons of ideas and ways to recreate some of their masterpieces.

Scrap Colouring is a fun website allowing children to create digital art. If they love to colour and create patterns they will have lots of fun playing around with scrap colouring.

Artsology is a website with lots pages of games and puzzles for you to have fun with art.
